When does a directory site become a link farm? Is #Google generating #spam?

“My email inbox is cluttered with offers from so called ‘SEO experts‘ who are offering me one way linking from top ranking sites – it is about time somebody dealt with these charlatans. “

We are all very aware that the success of a website depends on a myriad of variable factors…but how do you stay top in Google?

The baffling conundrum is that to stay high in search engine searches  you have to (in part) be linked to other pages –  but at what point does a site that you are linked to become a ‘link farm’ and how does that affect your ranking?

System Culture Limited have helped and assisted companies, individuals and organisations with their management of online and real world responsibilities, implementing strategies that have enabled them to work to  a higher economic and resource potential. Troubleshooting and improving navigation and search engine issues within existing websites. Taking over the management and administration of websites for companies who require extra manpower for the short or long term.

There was a lot of buzz around the Internet complaining about the draconian measures Google is using –  dealing with excessive links to website that appear on so called ‘link farms’ and treating innocent sites as such.

On the World Wide Web, a link farm is any group of web sites that all hyperlink to every other site in the group. Although some link farms can be created by hand, most are created through automated programs and services. A link farm is a form of spamming the index of a search engine (sometimes called spamdexing or spamexing). Other link exchange systems are designed to allow individual websites to selectively exchange links with other relevant websites and are not considered a form of spamdexing.

Smarter businesses outsource their web content generation to companies who know how to extract the biggest impact with the least fuss.

Excessive linking is nothing new and the practice has always been frowned upon. Google’s Webmaster Guidelines make it clear what standard of quality they require from pages before they index them and two of their criteria are listed below:

  • Keep the links on a given page to a reasonable number.
  • Create a useful, information-rich site, and write pages that clearly and accurately describe your content.
Providing you are ‘honest’ with your pages…there is nothing to fear.

Trying to generate sales on the Internet has become harder and harder, you need to be involved in so many things, social networking, linking and ‘search engine optimization’ with its implied superstitious voodoo. To be honest I think I will just roll a dice, if it is an odd number I will carry on with the nightmare and if it is an even number I will be nicer to my kids and maybe take them out for a walk on the beach (I might even buy them a puppy). Everything is just chance, even running a small business. Read more...
