I’m Backing Britain was a brief patriotic campaign aimed at boosting the British economy which flourished in early 1968. The campaign started spontaneously when five Surbiton secretaries volunteered to work an extra half an hour each day without pay in order to boost productivity, and urged others to do the same. This invitation received an enormous response and a campaign took off spectacularly, becoming a nationwide movement within a week. Trade unions were suspicious of, and some directly opposed to, the campaign as an attempt to extend working hours surreptitiously, and to hide inefficiency by management.

The campaign received official endorsement by the Prime Minister, Harold Wilson, but found being perceived as Government-endorsed was double-edged. The Union Flag logo encouraged by the campaign became highly visible on the high streets, and attempts were made to take over the campaign by Robert Maxwell who wanted to change its focus into an appeal to ‘Buy British’.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in search engines via the “natural” or un-paid (“organic” or “algorithmic”) search results. In general, the earlier (or higher ranked on the search results page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine’s users. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, video search, academic search, news search and industry-specific vertical search engines.

What Is Search Engine Optimisation?

In simple terms, Search Engine Optimization, often referred to as SEO,  is the process of increasing the amount of traffic (visitors) to a web site from search engines via intuitive or natural search word matches. These ‘matches’ are referred to as ‘keywords’. The basic aim is to create a website that contains enough ‘keywords’ in it to allow a search term to match the words within a web site, the earlier a site appears in the search results list, the more likely it is to get more visitors. Optimisation is not only aimed exclusively at words,  targeting different possible types of searches include: searches for images,  local services and business searches, or industry, product services with in specific search engines is also an important strategy.

Owning a website is like owning a grain of sand. Each grain of sand, when combined with other grains, eventually creates a beach. Only a very few proportionately settle on the top and become visible. This sounds very similar to the World Wide Web – I think?

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is a cost effective promotional tool and sometimes helps to get your grain of sand noticed and might be the answer for generating more sales or visits.

Are you a small business? A Social Network?

A small business is a business that is privately owned and operated, with a small number of employees and relatively low volume of sales. Small businesses are normally privately owned corporations, partnerships, or sole proprietorships. The legal definition of “small” varies by country and by industry, ranging from fewer than 15 employees under the Australian Fair Work Act 2009, 50 employees in the European Union and fewer than 500 employees to qualify for many U.S. Small Business Administration programs.

When you ride a horse your body has contact with the horse’s body. If you really get a good contact with a horse it feels like your spine is conected to the horse’s spine, a thought to turn right feels like it happens imediatly, you feel as one. This is a bizzare feeling but is an example of an organic plug in network. This feeling can be reproduced in a small business context. FaceBook ect. did not invent ‘networks’!

Using established networks can be an important way to achieve growth in small, medium and large businesses. If you get it right the flood gates will open and visitors will come flooding in! Sales will increase and your profile will soar. It is important that a robust strategy is created for a network sales campaign to succeed, achieve this and you will create a formidable and powerful tool.

We are all now all very aware that the success of a website depends on a myriad of  variable factors. One  stratagem employed by Optimizers is to ‘sell the brand’  via social networking sites. One of the main distributors is Twitter – if you already have an account you will be aware that the posts placed are 99% twitter shit. There are however more niche networking sites.

Get noticed, make your web site work for you – don’t let your web site be your master and you the slave. Make your investment of time, money and heartache pay.
